100,000 hours, 118 countries, one alumni community

In November 2021, as part of the launch of our Shaping the World Campaign, we called on our global alumni community to volunteer their time on campus, online and around the world to raise 100,000 volunteering and advocacy hours.

Now, less than two years later, our alumni have done it.

A total of 4,764 alumni in 118 countries, graduating across eight decades, from the 1950s to the 2020s, have been giving their time, talents, and expertise to raise 100,000 volunteering hours.

Tom Kern, MSc Public Policy and Administration 1979 and Chair of the Alumni Association Executive Committee expressed his gratitude to all alumni volunteers:

We made a difference. But what more can we do to keep the momentum rolling? Let’s truly live the LSE ethos of being curious about things and making a better world.

Every hour given by alumni has contributed towards this impressive milestone. Whether the work of global group volunteers to bring together local communities of curious minds, transformational conversations with students through the Ask an Alum programme and academic departmental volunteering, or advocacy of the work and research of LSE through Gift One Hour, alumni volunteering is having a positive impact on future and current students, alumni, the School and the wider world.

Professor Emma McCoy, Vice President and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) congratulated the alumni community on achieving the milestone:

We are so excited to see what’s next, because, with your support, we know this is just the beginning.

We encourage you to explore our volunteering playlist on YouTube where you can hear more from some of our alumni about the role volunteering plays in their lives. Visit our 100,000 hours resource hub to learn more and celebrate this milestone.

Curious minds are Shaping the World. Thank you to all alumni volunteers.
