Alumni welcome new graduates around the world
Setting out on your own after graduating from LSE, often moving to a new city or even a new country, can feel daunting. Thankfully, as part of LSE’s global alumni community, you have access to local groups around the world who are ready to welcome you.
Each year our groups take part in Welcome to the City, a global event series designed to help new graduates connect, share experiences and build lasting relationships in their local area. This year we are delighted to announce that our alumni hosted 54 events across 35 countries.
Europe and Middle East
In Europe, alumni groups across 14 countries hosted events. Our Swedish alumni met at the Residence of the British Ambassador in Stockholm where alumna and Deputy Head of Mission, Kate Orrick hosted the evening. Alumni in Kyiv met up to discuss Ukraine’s high-tech industries with Andrii Nikiforov, CEO of Motor Sich, while our alumni in Jordan hosted an event at Dar Ne’meh, an organisation which seeks to empower women by providing training in culinary arts and crafts.
Americas and the Caribbean
In this region our alumni held 21 events, covering seven countries, from Canada to Chile. Our alumni in Brazil enjoyed networking at a local bar while our Mexican alumni met up at the British Embassy where they heard from alumni Mónica Tapia, David Gomez, Mauricio Ontivero. Many of our alumni got to meet interesting figures – in Jamaica alumni heard from the sociologist, writer and academic Dr Leith Dunn, while alumni in New York met LSE Associate Professor, Dr Grace Lordan to hear about careers and how to create their own luck..
Welcome to the City is the bridge for new alumni to see who they can become. They meet other alumni who have been where they were – with that mixture of excitement and uncertainty about life after the LSE. They hear those stories and realize that they are not alone in this chapter of their lives. Within a few short hours, alumni can find their new community. And it’s our hope that, a few years down the road, the same alumni can provide the same support to new alumni who come to a future Welcome to the City.
Asia and Pacific
Across Asia and the Pacific, 14 cities from Pakistan to New Zealand hosted events. Our alumni in Singapore had the chance to hear from LSE alumna and New Zealand High Commissioner to Singapore Her Excellency Gabrielle Rush at a fireside chat. Alumni in Seoul were joined by Dr Ki-Hoon Hong who shared his expert knowledge of Stablecoins in a knowledge exchange. Meanwhile, the LSE Alumni Association of Chengdu collaborated with alumni associations across Southwest China for a forum on Technological Evolution and Financial Transformation.
We had a wonderful event with Her Excellence, Gabby Rush. We enjoyed hearing her memories of studying at LSE and how that shaped her thinking. It was a great way to remind alumni about what they can treasure by engaging with the fellow alumni in town.
Welcome to the City has become one of the events we genuinely look forward to. We've been steadily growing our events here in Tokyo, having organised more than 30 during the last 5 years, but Welcome to the City is special – it's where recent graduates really discover the alumni community for themselves.
We hope all our alumni enjoyed connecting with their local community. But more than that, we hope Welcome to the City marks the beginning of a lifelong connection. Wherever you go, your LSE alumni community is here to support, inspire, and grow with you.
