Creating a lasting legacy between LSE and the US alumni community

The Alumni and Friends of LSE in the USA (AFLSE) was founded more than 50 years ago – it’s the School’s oldest recognized alumni group – with the mission to serve the alumni community and encourage students from the US to study at LSE. Thanks to 40 years of philanthropic support from alumni and friends, 150 US students have received the life changing AFLSE Scholarship to embark on a one-year taught master’s programme at LSE. Hear from this year’s recipient Tina Huang, who shares with us what the Scholarship has enabled her to do and the impact it will have on her future endeavors in the US.

Earlier this year, AFLSE announced they had donated its endowed scholarship fund, worth $500,000, to LSE – with the aim of securing it as a fully funded scholarship in perpetuity. In today’s complex and increasingly uncertain world, AFLSE wants to make sure they can continue to give this opportunity to people like Tina - future world leaders, policymakers, and innovators – LSE alumni who will serve their local communities, the US, and the world at large.

Together, AFLSE and the School have pledged to raise a further $500,000 to secure its future as an endowed scholarship at LSE. Gifts today from you - our alumni in the United States – will help us reach this goal, helping to guarantee deserving US students will continue in perpetuity to be shaped by one of the most diverse and exceptional universities in the world. Help us ensure every year a student can fulfill the same dream we all had of studying at LSE.

From the AFLSE Board

We can all agree that the LSE is unique! The AFLSE Scholarship is based on academic merit and financial need, with no restrictions as to age, field of study, or degree being sought. It gives exceptional students an opportunity to challenge themselves in an atmosphere filled with energy, global diversity and academic excellence. This was all made possible by generous alumni like yourselves; please consider a donation to help fund this Scholarship in perpetuity.

John Casey, Former President of AFLSE (MSc Industrial Relations 1991)

The AFLSE’s Scholarship has been at the core of our efforts to support LSE, and we can think of no better way to support the School than to help some of our most promising students fulfill their dreams of studying at LSE. As Chair of the AFLSE Scholarship Committee, I see first hand the amazing difference the Scholarship makes to these students and how grateful they are for the opportunity to study at LSE.

Beth Halpern, Chair of the AFLSE Scholarship Committee, (MSc Public Policy and Administration 1998)

We are incredibly grateful to all the US alumni who have donated over the years to support the 150 students who have received the Scholarship to date. Together, AFLSE and the School have pledged to raise a further $500,000 to secure its future as an endowed scholarship at LSE. A gift of any amount will help us reach this goal and ensure that a talented US student can fulfill the same dream we all had of studying at LSE.

Tom Kern, Former President of AFLSE, (MSc Public Policy and Administration 1979)

AFLSE has awarded a scholarship for more than 40 years, and as the current President I am delighted that the School is committed to ensuring the future of the Scholarship, guaranteeing deserving students from the US continue to be shaped by one of the most diverse and exceptional universities in the world. Please consider making a gift to the AFLSE Scholarship Fund, to help fully endow the Scholarship and create a lasting legacy between LSE and the US alumni community.

Mont Rogers, President of AFLSE, (MSc Economic History 1987)
