Can a small gift secure a student’s future?
When first-generation graduate Tom Wilkinson arrived at LSE from the north of England for his master’s, he worked part-time and budgeted to spend about £40 a week — “It was possible, but difficult to really thrive!” he says – to help meet London’s high living costs.
Funding from the School and the LSE Students’ Union, via donations from alumni and supporters, made the difference to his student life.
“The support I received undoubtedly paved the way for my academic career. Today I’m on my way to completing my International History PhD. I have been a visiting research scholar at Columbia University in New York and have taught history and international relations at LSE.”
“LSE students come from a range of backgrounds, and some might still feel embarrassed to seek help. But because of the amazing support that the LSE community can provide to students from poorer backgrounds, first-generation university students can get by and secure their futures.”
