“Scholarships are blessings for students like me”
LSE offers the Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Programme to eligible applicants from developing countries. The Government of Japan funds the scholarship and it is administered by The World Bank Group.
Dr Shailey Gokhale is one of its current recipients studying MSc in Global Health Policy. She previously spent seven years working for the Ministry of Health in India, and was keen to further her experience and understanding of implementing health policies through the MSc at LSE. However, she would have faced financial hardship undertaking her studies without a scholarship.
These scholarships are blessings for students like me. We would not have been able to actually pursue or even think about coming to a city like London and doing a course at the London School of Economics.
Being awarded the scholarship was a significant moment for the Gokhale family.
It was a dream of my entire family for somebody to go and pursue a course at LSE, stay in London and see the life in the UK. I think getting the scholarship was one of the happiest moments for me and my family.
Shailey plans to return to India after completing her studies with a more global perspective on policymaking. Once back, she hopes to deliver important changes to its healthcare sector.
With the knowledge that I’m gaining through this degree, I can actually go back and help my own country to draft policies in a much better way.
Thanks to this generous scholarship, successful applicants are supported with tuition fees, living costs and travel to and from their home country at the start and end of their degree.
If I have to say one thing to the donors who are supporting scholarships at LSE, I would say a big thank you. These scholarships are helping students from low- and middle-income countries realise their dream.
