How a gift in your Will shapes LSE’s future
Over 130 years ago, a legacy gift played an important part in LSE’s beginnings. Today, gifts in Wills continue to support students and ideas that improve society.
We are very fortunate that so many of our alumni and friends have chosen over the years to leave LSE a gift in their Will; and many more have pledged to do so.
Creating a lasting legacy at LSE
Sian Pierce (BSc Maths with Economics 2016) is one of those students who was able to study at LSE thanks to a legacy gift from Peter Bence, who himself studied Economics at LSE in 1962. Today Sian has a successful career in banking and is a powerful advocate for social mobility.

Your gift could be the key that unlocks somebody's potential just as it did mine.
Motivated by the impact LSE had on her life when she attended LSE as a young girl paid for by the local authority, Barbara Brilliant (BSc Sociology 1957) has decided in turn to leave a bequest in her Will to LSE to repay something back.

LSE made such a difference to me. The reputation of LSE and the fact that I'd been there – it carried a certain weight. I decided to leave a bequest in my Will to LSE because I became such a changed person.
Barbara and Sian tell their stories beautifully in this video.
Celebrating LSE’s legacy supporters
Our annual Legacy Lunch is a treasured moment to remember and celebrate those past and future gifts.

Legacy gifts give LSE the freedom to pursue long term thinking; to invest in our people, protect academic independence, take intellectual risks, and plan for generations that we will never meet by leaving them an institution that has done so much across generations and that we believe can continue to do so by living up to its ideals.
Since the first gift to LSE from Heny Hutchinson in 1894 the School has been the beneficiary of large and small legacies alike, given by those who value its work and want to see it perpetuated. As an appreciation of their foresight, we remember their names in a special Book of Remembrance which is kept in the Shaw Library and is on display every year at our Legacy Lunch.
