We need a just and sustainable future
We need a just and sustainable future
Our world is on an unsustainable course. We know that massive transformation is needed to lower carbon emissions and reverse the course of climate change. But instead of global collaboration toward a durable and just transition, we see nations and institutions pulling away from climate targets and deprioritising sustainability.
Change needs to happen fast, and it needs to be led by the social sciences. That’s because the challenges at the heart of sustainability – the ways in which we organise our communities, operate our businesses, invest our money and steward the natural resources around us – are social challenges driven by how we relate to one another and the world around us.
LSE has conducted cutting-edge research and teaching aimed at building a better society for 130 years. Now, with the help of our community of supporters and coordinated through our new Global School of Sustainability, made possible by the generosity of alumnus Lei Zhang, the School is leading the charge in understanding how the social sciences can create a more sustainable world.
We are harnessing the full strength of LSE’s social science leadership to understand and reshape the systems of finance, economy, politics and society that stand in the way of change.

The establishment of the Global School of Sustainability at LSE serves as a beacon for bold ideas and transformative action. Together, we can navigate the complexities of systemic change and pave the way for a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
We’re making a global impact, but we still have a long way to go to create the urgent change our planet needs. We need your ongoing support to power the research, teaching and convening work that will power sustainable transformation.
We all need a sustainable future. Are you ready to help us shape it?
When it comes to all these big problems that we're facing in society, I think Geography has allowed me to approach these issues from different angles and try to think of solutions that will shape the world. I will be forever grateful to those who gave, for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to embrace all LSE has to offer.
