We need policies that work in the real world not just on paper

We need to bridge the implementation gap.

Urgent challenges need analysis and action. Supporting LSE powers breakthrough discoveries that translate into working policies.

The challenges of democracy, political economy, sustainability, inequalities and new technologies are all—literally and first and foremost—problems of and for the social sciences. New technologies and scientific breakthroughs do not deploy themselves, and whether they are used for good or ill depends on choices we make as a society about how they can and should be used.

Whether we realise their benefits depends on the economic and regulatory environment we create, on how we frame and communicate their purpose and meaning, how we measure and track their effects, and how effectively our political and economic systems are designed to use them.

LSE can and should be the spear point for developing the frameworks, ideas and thinking needed to address the problems of society today.

Professor Larry Kramer, LSE President and Vice Chancellor

Professor Larry Kramer explains why the translation of new thinking and research into policy outputs is one of the areas that we are focusing on with our Shaping the World Campaign.

Professor Larry Kramer explains why the translation of new thinking and research into policy outputs is so important.
